About APES – Association of Protecting Exotic Species

Association of Protecting Exotic Species (APES) is a passionate community interest organisation dedicated to the welfare of exotic animals. Founded in July 2022, APES operates a small exotic animal shelter and rescue serving the North West of England. We provide a range of services – from a rescue shelter and rehabilitation centre to a pet shop and pet care clinic – all aimed at helping people with specialist exotic pets. Our team is driven by love for animals and a commitment to make a positive impact on every creature we encounter.

Our Mission: Rescue, Rehabilitate, Rehome

We stand by the “three R’s” of our mission: Rescue, Rehabilitate, Rehome.

  1. Rescue: We respond to situations where exotic animals are in need – whether due to abandonment, illegal trade, cruelty, or simply being lost or injured. Every life is precious, and our first step is always to bring these animals to safety.
  2. Rehabilitate: Once rescued, many exotic pets require specialised care to heal. Our volunteers and veterinary partners provide medical treatment, proper nutrition, and a safe environment to help these animals recover from trauma, neglect, or injury.
  3. Rehome: Finally, when an animal is healthy and ready, we work to find it a loving forever home. We carefully screen and educate potential adopters to ensure they are prepared to care for an exotic pet responsibly.

This process not only saves individual animals but also contributes to the bigger picture of conservation and responsible pet ownership.

Our Values and Impact

APES is built on a foundation of compassion, transparency, and community. We are a registered non-profit Community Interest Company (CIC), which means every donation and fee directly supports the animals in our care and the services we provide. All our staff are unpaid volunteers who donate their time and skills out of the goodness of their hearts.

Education is another key pillar of our work. Through workshops, outreach programs, and hands-on guidance, we have trained over 100 people in proper exotic pet care, teaching them how to keep their pets healthy and happy. By empowering pet owners with knowledge, we prevent future neglect and ensure better long-term care.

A Community for Exotic Animal Lovers

At APES, we know that protecting exotic species is a team effort. That’s why we created a dedicated social network for exotic animal lovers – an online community where supporters, pet owners, and enthusiasts can come together to share, learn, and take action.

Our social network is more than just a typical platform – it’s a vibrant hub for conservation, education, and community. Exotic pet owners often crave a friendly space to celebrate their unique pets, ask questions, and swap advice with others who understand their passion. That’s exactly what our network provides: a welcoming environment to connect with like-minded people, share your love for exotic (and domestic) animals, and contribute to our mission of protecting species across the globe.

Inside the APES community, you’ll find:

  • An interactive news feed with the latest updates and rescue stories.
  • Discussion forums to ask questions and exchange ideas.
  • Special interest groups (“Spaces”) for reptiles, parrots, invertebrates, and more.
  • Events and success stories to keep you inspired and informed.
  • A mobile-friendly platform (and app) so you can stay connected anywhere.

Most importantly, our community transforms supporters into family. Members cheer each other on, share experiences, and mentor others – building an empowered network united for exotic animals.
